Game Announcements:

  • Grey Fox Games announced War of the Worlds: The New Wave, a two-player asymmetric deck-building game set a few years after H.G. Wells' classic novel The War of the Worlds, which they are bringing over from Lavka Games in Russia. The game launched on Kickstarter on January 10.

  • Renegade Game Studios announced Proving Grounds, the first title in the Solo Hero Series. In this single-player game by experienced designer Kane Klenko, read the story of Maia Strongheart and recreate her extraordinary battle. Immerse yourself in this fantastical world written by Monica Valentinelli and illustrated by Matthew Dobrich. This title will be available on game shelves beginning in April 2019.

  • Smirk & Dagger announced We Need to Talk…, a new game for its Smirk & Laughter line.

  • Calliope Games announced Tsuro: Phoenix Rising, a brand new tile-laying game that is the third in the classic Tsuro series. Tsuro: Phoenix Rising can be played by 2-8 players, and plays in less than an hour, and launched on Kickstarter on Thursday, January 10.

  • Talon Strikes announced its next game, Winterborne, a Euro game designed by Brian Suhre  (Coldwater Crown, Paradox). It will launch on Kickstarter on February 19.

  • Fantasy Flight announced The Lord of the Rings: Journeys in Middle-earth.

  • Schmidt Spiele to release Doppelt so Clever, which features similar gameplay as Ganz schon Clever, but with five new ways to collect dice and score points, in early 2019.

  • Winning Moves is releasing Precious Cargo, a two-player pick-up-and-deliver game, in February.

  • Plaid Hat Games announced Super Punch Fighter, a game of arena battle and video-game powers for 1-6 players, available from retailers and Plaid Hat's web store this summer.

  • Restoration Games announced Conspiracy: The Solomon Gambit, their restoration of the classic 1973 spy game, designed by Dr. Eric Solomon, coming summer 2019.

  • Weird Giraffe Games teased the engine-building game Tiny Tumble Town from designer Kevin Russ, heading to Kickstarter in late 2019/early 2020.

  • Board&Dice announced in an email that it had three new gateway games coming in 2019. Inuit: The Snow Folk, a card-based strategy game of drafting and tableau building for 2-4 players, is coming in March 2019.  Dust in the Wings, a family game of perception, planning, and picturing the beauty of nature, is coming at UKGE in 2019. World Shapers, a card drafting game is also coming at UKGE in 2019.
    Days of Wonder is releasing Corinth, a roll-and-write game from Sebastien Pauchon that was originally called Yspahan: The Dice Game, in March 2019 in Europe and in May 2019 in North America.

  • Z-Man announced Noctiluca, an abstract game that plays one to four players from designer Shem Phillips.

  • SpyGlass Games announced its next game coming out will be Phantoms of Manhattan, a cooperative game for 2-5 players, where you must strap on your Plasma Pack, zip up your jumpsuit, and help defend New York City from an outpouring of paranormal and metaphysical creatures from beyond!

  • Next Move Games announced its next release, Tuki, created by Grzegorz Rejchtman, the designer of the Ubongo series, and illustrated by Chris Quilliams.

  • Plan B Games announced to the conclusion of the Century series, with Emerson Matsuuchi's Century: A New World. Century: A New World is fully mixable with Spice Road or Eastern Wonders or both. Century: A New World is expected to debut at Origins 2019 and plays for 2-4 players in 30-45 minutes.

  • Eggertspiele announced its next game, Era: Medieval Age, which was designed by Matt Leacock. Era: Medieval Age serves as a spiritual successor to Roll Through The Ages.  While Roll Through The Ages was a pioneer for Roll & Write genre, Era will serve as a pioneer for Roll & Build, as Era: Medieval Age serves as the first in a series of collaborative Roll & Build games between Matt Leacock and Eggertspiele. Era is expected to debut at GenCon 2019 and should in retailers shortly after.

  • Low Player Count’s Travis Hill announced that he designed a small experiential solo game about watching other people, called Close Encounters.

Expansion Announcements:

  • Western Legends' first big expansion, Ante Up, was announced. It introduces new features, such as new ways to gamble, the Gambler Track, event cards, new territories, and the locomotive. It also adds more characters, items, and story cards to the game. Ante Up went to Kickstarter on January 10.

  • Wolfgang Warsch's The Quacks of Quedlinburg is getting an expansion with components for a fifth player, more ingredient books, a new "fool's herb", and the introduction of herbal witches, coming in 2019 from Schmidt Spiele.

  • Renegade Game Studios announced the first expansion to the anticipated reprint of Bargain Quest. The Black Market Expansion introduces new Heroes, Employees, play modes, and more to this card-based retail experience designed by Jonathan Ying, with art by Victoria Ying. You can find this expansion on game shelves beginning in May.

  • Renegade Game Studios announced two more expansions -- Chaotic Goods and Solo Mode -- to the reprint of Bargain Quest. These expansions introduce new Heroes, Employees, play modes, and more to this card-based retail experience designed by Jonathan Ying and illustrated by Victoria Ying. These expansions will be on game shelves beginning May 2019.

  • Libellud announced Dice Forge: Rebellion, an expansion for Dice Forge, which is available for preorder and expected to be released in February.

  • SpyGlass Games announced VENOM Assault: Villains & Valor, the first expansion for VENOM Assault, which will be hitting Kickstarter in March. It will bring 145 new cards to the game to add to the forces of VENOM and Freedom Squadron, along with a whole new event and reward deck that you can mix and match to create a new gaming experience.

  • Everything Epic announced its new expansion for Big Trouble in Little China: the Game, Legacy of Lo Pan, priced at $39.95. The expansion is slated to release in late March. The Legacy of Lo Pan expansion increases the max player count from 4 to 6 players. Legacy of Lo Pan will allow players embark on a brand new story campaign. The campaign mode, comes with a new mission book, containing nearly 40 pages of new story adventures, and changes key mechanics of the core game to provide an exciting new experience that will take players through the time travel story, unlocking all new special rewards to use in the new final showdown with a younger more powerful Lo Pan.

  • Button Shy Games announced that Sprawlopolis expansion material titled Sprawlopolis: Beaches is coming in February, first to their Board Game of the Month Club, but then as a separate release.

Release Date Announcements:

  • Stonemaier Games opened pre-orders for Wingspan, a competitive, medium-weight, card-driven, engine-building board game for 1-5 players from designer Elizabeth Hargrave. Pre-orders ship by mid-January. This is followed by the worldwide retail release date on March 8.

  • Kids Table Board Gaming announced that Bugs on Rugs, designed by Peter C. Hayward, is now available for pre-order.

Digital Board Game Announcements:

  • Dire Wolf Digital announced a new slate of digital adaptations of tabletop games that it will be developing and releasing over the coming months and year -- Mage Knight, Root, Sagrada, Yellow & Yangtze, Wings of Glory, and Raiders of the North Sea.

  • AEG announced that Nomad Games has released Mystic Vale on Steam. It is available for download here.

Other Game Tidbits:

  • In a trademark lawsuit against Netflix, Chooseco noted that its Choose Your Own Adventure board game sold over 150,00 units, writing, "Chooseco has licensed the mark for a tabletop board game that has sold over 150,000 units since its launch in June 2018 seven months ago."

  • Stonemaier Games responded to printing errors in the first run of Wingspan, saying it will print an update pack at its own expense that they will make available for free from Meeplesource in the U.S. and Board Game Extras in the U.K.

  • Some details about Competo/Marektoy's Klask 4 were revealed, including the game's cover.

  • Samuel Bailey, one of the designers who worked on Forbidden Stars, is looking to bring the game "back to life in some form or the other" after the Fantasy Flight/Games Workshop breakup killed the chance of a Forbidden Stars expansion.

  • Alban Viard cancelled funding for Brutus on January 3.

  • Burnt Island Games announced that In the Hall of the Mountain King will come to Kickstarter on February 5.

  • Grey Fox Games announced a new campaign for Tsukuyumi: Full Moon Down, a strategic area control game featuring asymmetric factions, coming to Kickstarter in March. This game was previously released on Kickstarter by King Raccoon Games in 2017. This new edition of Tsukuyumi will now include minis to replace the original cardboard standees as well as updated rules and more. There will be an option for previous backers of the game to grab an upgrade kit.

  • TMG is offering the original Yokohama in deluxe format once again, through the Deluxified™ Yokohama Duel Kickstarter campaign. Additionally, TMG will be offering upgrade packs of Deluxe components in the campaign as well, so you are able to have the same Deluxified™ experience with the retail version of the game.

  • The third edition of Prêt-à-Porter from Ignacy Trzewiczek and Portal Games will hit Kickstarter in 2019 with new art from Kwanchai Moriya.
