Game Announcements:

  • At Gen Con two years ago, Restoration Games announced Fireball Island: The Curse of Vul-Kar. Last year, they revealed Return to Dark Tower. This year, they'll be on the stage for the Dice Tower Live show at Gen Con on Friday August 2 at 2:00 PM to reveal the identity of Restoration’s latest top-secret project. Stay tuned to the @RestorationGame twitter account to hear the news. 

  • Plan B Games announced that it is extending the Century: Golem series starting with its first sequel, Century: Golem Edition Eastern Mountains. "Golems fans will get a chance to dive once more into the world of Carvania while serving as crystal traders! Eastern Mountains serves as a re-implementation of Eastern Wonders and offers the same mixable game feature that fans loved about the Century Spice series. Fans can expect the third game in the Golem trilogy to conclude in 2020."Eastern Mountains is available now for pre-order at PlanBGames.com or players can pick up a copy at Gen Con 2019. It will be exclusively sold on the webshop and at conventions until August 2020. 

  • Days of Wonder announced Deep Blue, a new push-your-luck game by Asger Harding Granerud & Daniel Skjold Pedersen. The game is expected to be available in October in Europe and in North America at a suggested retail price of $49.99. 

  • Letiman Games announced Adventure Tactics: Domianne's Tower - an encounter-based, campaign-driven, cooperative tactical game. "Begin your journey as one of 5 basic classes and battle your way through a branching campaign, choosing your own path in an attempt to overthrow the evil Queen Domianne. With each encounter, you will level up and unlock over 15 Elite Classes, adding new actions, equipment, and abilities. With multiple scenarios and a unique multiclass system, Adventure Tactics is a strategic campaign game with replayability." Adventure Tactics: Domianne's Tower launched on Kickstarter July 29. 

  • IELLO announced Ishtar: Gardens of Babylon, a new big game from Bruno Cathala, co-designed with Evan Singh, illustrated by Biboun. This tile placement game plays 2-4 players in 45 minutes.

  • Reiner Knizia announced an upcoming international edition of The Quest for El Dorado, with art by Vincent Dutrait, available “later this year in many countries and languages.”

  • Capital Gains Studio, a board game publisher that specializes in publishing finance theme board games, announced that, after a period of redevelopment, Wongamania: Banana Economy is back with a Second Edition. The first edition of Wongamania: Banana Economy has been sold out since the end of 2018. 

  • BGG posted about Las Vegas Royale, which it said “modifies/improves the base game of Rüdiger Dorn’s Las Vegas by having you place a pair of (larger) bills at each casino. The “Royale” comes from modifying powers placed at some casinos.” The game debuts in the U.S. from Ravensburger at Gen Con this year. 

  • Funko announced its first strategy tabletop board game, Funkoverse, where you can "combine your favorite characters and go head-to-head in four exciting game scenarios."

  • Looney Labs announced it has partnered with Cardinal Games on Marvel Fluxx and Jumanji Fluxx. There will be two different versions: The Cardinal box has their logo and is taped shut; the Looney Labs box has our logo, a starburst that says "Specialty Edition with 7 bonus cards," and is shrink-wrapped. It is these seven bonus cards that create the price difference--MSRP on the Cardinal version is $15, the Looney Labs version is $20. Cardinal's version will be in Walmart, Target, and other chain stores; Looney Labs' version will be in all the usual places--game stores, toy stores, book stores, etc. Both versions will be sold on Amazon. The Cardinal version hits stores on August 1, the Looney Labs version may take until August 15 to be stocked. 

  • Renegade Game Studios announced Gates of Delirium, a new 19th century horror-inspired game design by Mandy and Jordan Goodard for release in October. Gates of Delirium is for 2-4 Investigators aged 14+ who'll compete for 30-45 minutes to collect the most victory points. 

  • Grey Fox announced it is working with a Brazilian company, Meeple BR, to make their game Triora: City of Witches, available in the U.S. Triora: City of Witches is a worker placement game where you are a witch in the Italian city of Triora, trying to achieve vengeance against the city that burned their leader. The witches will compete to destroy the city, and the one that brings to most ruin to it will be accepted as their new leader. Triora is not available in stores, but is available through the Grey Fox website. 

  • Portal Games announced Imperial Settlers: Empires of the North, a new card game set in the Imperial Settlers universe from designer Ignacy Trzewiczek. This is the third game in the Imperial Settlers line following Imperial Settlers: Roll & Write which released in the second quarter of 2019. Imperial Settlers: Empires of the North will be available as a pre-release at Gen Con with a worldwide release on August 22.  

  • Kids Table announced the soft release of its next game in partnership with HUCH! and Friends! -- Kokonana, a "wonderful take on the old memory game," for 2-4 gamers ages 5+. 

  • Dire Wolf Digital, in partnership with Penny Arcade, announced that Clank! Legacy: Acquisitions Incorporated will be available this September at retailers everywhere. In this Legacy game, you'll work with and against your co-adventurers through a 10+ game campaign. Your successes, failures, and choices will permanently affect the game and the world around you as your journey unfolds, resulting in a unique and fully replayable Clank! game. Continuing the ongoing physical and digital publishing partnership between Dire Wolf and Renegade Game Studios, Clank! Legacy Acquisitions Incorporated will be co-published and distributed by Renegade.

Expansion Announcements:

  • Lookout Spiele announced Barenpark: The Bad News Bears. The new expansion by Phil Walker-Harding provides three new modules for the base game, and is expected to be available in August.

  • Board&Dice announced that it would release four new modules for Sierra West, each of them created by veteran designers. Designer Samuel Bailey, best known for Forbidden Stars, is already at work on the first module for the Sierra West expansion.

  • On BGG, designer Tom Lehmann gave a first look at Res Arcana: Lux et Tenebrae, an expansion that expands the game to five players, among other things. 

  • Mondo Games and Restoration Games announced the next license to appear in their head-to-head skirmish game system Unmatched. Fans of Jurassic Park will be thrilled to learn that the pair of two-player sets and a solo-hero pack are on the way, leading with Unmatched: InGen vs. Raptors in late 2019. Sattler vs. T rex and Dr. Alan Grant's solo expansion will expand the line in 2020, allowing players to pit even more of their favorite heroes in combat against iconic dinosaurs from the 1993 film. As with all Unmatched sets, the power to mix and match heroes and maps to create a customized play experience is not only possible but encouraged.  Mondo added that these Jurassic Unmatched releases will replace the previously announced Jurassic Park: The Chaos Gene game which is no longer in development. 

  • Floodgate Games announced that the Sagrada: Passion expansion, which introduces inspiration cards, rare glass dice and cards, rare glass private objectives, and symmetry public objectives, will be available for pickup at Gen Con or for shipping as of August 1. 

  • Czech Games Edition announced the expansion for Through the Ages, titled Through the Ages: New Leaders & Wonders, which will come out in Essen on October 24 (arriving in the U.S. by the end of November), for the recommended retail price of $24.95. The digital version will be released two months earlier on September 12, via Google Play, App Store, and Steam, and will cost $4.99. 

  • Portal Games announced the first expansion for Empires of the North, Empires of the North: Japanese Islands. This expansion, which debuts at Essen Spiel, includes two brand new decks and additional island cards. 

  • Kids Table announced Foodfighters: The Sweet Expansion and Foodfighters: The Salty Expansion, two new Foodfighters factions releasing at Gen Con.  The Sweets faction includes nine new fighters tiles, three Sweets-only power cards, and a sheet of nine thought bubble clingers. The Salty faction also includes nine new fighters tiles, three Salty-only power cards, and a sheet of nine thought bubble clingers.

  • Renegade Game Studios announced the Overlight: The Ivory Mausoleum RPG adventure supplement is coming in August. Set on the shard of Pyre and written for experienced Skyborn champions, this three-part was designed by Chris Williams and Paul Alexander Butler, with illustrations by Joanna Barnum. The 32-page module is printed in full color and is perfect to play as a one-shot or as part of a larger campaign. It has an MSRP of $15.00.  

Release Date Announcements:

  • Red Raven Games announced that The Ancient World (Second Edition) is now available at local game stores. 

  • Renegade Game Studios announced that Bubble Tea is now available at local game stores.

  • TMG announced that it has two new titles that will be coming out to coincide with Gen Con -- Dilluvia Project and Old West Empresario. Both of these games will be available at retailers on August 1 and will be featured at the TMG booth at Gen Con 2019. 

  • Renegade Game Studios announced that Paladins of the West Kingdom, designed by Shem Phillips and SJ Macdonald with art from The Mico, is available for pre-order. It will be released in October 2019.  

Digital Board Game Announcements:

  • Bezier Games announced it has released a free app for Silver. The app is live to download on Android and iOS. The app is currently two player only, you vs an A.I. while the physical game accommodates 2-4 players. Bezier added that "The app will not remain free forever, so strike while the iron's hot!" 

  • BoardGameArena announced it added a digital implementation of Kingdomino to its site. 

  • Dire Wolf Digital announced that Raiders of the North Sea released on Steam, iOS and Android phones and tablets, and the Nintendo Switch on Tuesday, 7/30. 

Other Game Tidbits:

  • As of December 31st, 2019, the license for Solomon Kane will revert back to Cabinet from Pinnacle. All sales, both electronic and print, of the Solomon Kane setting for the Savage Worlds RPG will cease. Pinnacle will publish a short conversion document for The Savage World of Solomon Kane, bringing the 2012 publication up to date with the more recent Savage Worlds Adventure Edition rules. Pinnacle is also conducting a sale on its remaining print stock of The Savage World of Solomon Kane, The Path of Kane, Foes of Kane, and the Traveler's Tales adventure collection.

  • Prolific wargame designer Richard H. Berg has passed away

  • CMON and Xplored announced Teburu, a “brand-new gaming system that allows players to seamlessly integrate the physical and digital worlds.”

  • Daniel Peterson disclosed in a Facebook post that he is no longer working at Indie Game Studios, where he did Product Acquisition, Development, Sales, Marketing from October 8, 2018 to August 5, 2019.

  • Lance Myxter disclosed in a Facebook post that he was no longer working for Tasty Minstrel Games.

  • Hunter Shelburne disclosed in a Facebook post that he was no longer working for Pandasaurus Games as of the beginning of July.

  • Asmodee Group has acquired French board game site Tric Trac

  • Funagain Fullfillment, a division of Funagain Games, announced it has acquired Ship Naked and Hit Point Sales from Tabletop Tycoon, owned by Game Salute’s Dan Yarrington.  

  • Asmodee USA announced the formation of a new board game studio, Unexpected Games, centered around "innovative design" and spearheaded by game designer Corey Konieczka. Konieczka joined the team at Fantasy Flight Games in 2005.  He departs his role as VP of Research & Design at Fantasy Flight Games to lead Unexpected Games. The first title from Unexpected Games is expected to release in 2020. While no details about the game have been made public, Konieczka explained that "it will be a multilayered experience that tells a story in a unique way."

  • Bloomberg Businessweek wrote an article titled “The Rise of the Professional Dungeon Master,” noting that "Nerd culture, Stranger Things, and the gig economy have created a world where Dungeons & Dragons enthusiasts host games for $500."

  • Dance Card! cancelled its Kickstarter campaign and plans to relaunch on September 24. 

  • Complexcity from Big Kid Games failed to fund on its second attempt on Kickstarter.

  • According to Geek Native, Kickstarter suspended the Innsmouth '86 for Call of Cthulhu 7th edition campaign, citing "Kickstarter rules require creators to fulfill their previous projects before launching new ones," and putting RPG publisher Stygian Fox’s future in doubt.

  • Grey Fox Games announced that its next Kickstarter project, After the Empire, a worker placement and tower defense game designed by Evan Halbert and Ryan Mauk of Portland Gamecraft, will launch on Tuesday August 13.

  • Fowers Games announced Burgle Bros 2: The Casino Capers is coming to Kickstarter on August 15.
